By using this method, a motor can reach 150 percent of its rated torque while only using 50 percent of its rated current. When starting a motor with a switch, and a variable frequency drive isn't used for the control of electrical input, the motor will immediately draw full voltage at about 300 percent of its rated current while producing less than 50 percent of its rated torque.
